On June 16, 2020, the High Court in Naivasha quashed an order by the State banning the operations of four donkey slaughterhouses in Kenya.

The court ruled that Legal notice 63 of 2020 issued by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya violated the rights of the proprietors of the abattoirs.

Star Brilliant slaughterhouse in Naivasha, which slaughters over 100 donkeys per day, was among the facilities affected by the ban.

According to Judge Richard Mwongo, the legal notice was issued without proper consultation with the affected parties, leading to a violation of their rights under Article 47.

“The legal notice violates the rights of Star Brilliant slaughterhouse under Article 47. The slaughterhouse is therefore granted a stay to operate in light of the failure by the respondent to file back,” said the judge.
