June 15, 2020 - The Chinese Embassy in Kenya has denied reports that its nationals are planning to leave the country en masse due to COVID-19 fears.
The Embassy's Spokesperson, Xueqing Huang, stated that the reports published in a local newspaper were false and that no such plans were in place.
According to Huang, the reports claimed that some 400 Chinese nationals had obtained a court order to enable them to leave the country on June 16, citing a lack of trust in the Kenyan health system to manage the virus.
However, Huang dismissed the reports as 'fabricated,' stating that there was no passenger flight to China this week.
She also clarified that the group's reported leader, Ambassador Wu Peng, was not involved in the alleged mass exodus.
Instead, Huang explained that Ambassador Wu Peng was set to leave the country as part of a normal transfer, with the departure date yet to be confirmed.
The Embassy has urged Chinese nationals in Kenya to strictly observe the COVID-19 containment measures issued by authorities in the host country.
