As Kenya continues to implement tough restrictions to combat the spread of COVID-19, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has urged Kenyans to report individuals sneaking out of lockdown areas. The lockdown, which has been in place since April, affects counties such as Nairobi, Mombasa, and Mandera, where movement in and out is restricted.
Despite the restrictions, some individuals have been found to be sneaking out of these areas, putting themselves and others at risk of infection. Kagwe has asked people, especially those in rural Kenya, to report such individuals through the Nyumba Kumi administrative structures.
“Utilize this governance structure to ensure that there are no strangers coming to your villages and homes because this is the main way the virus is transmitted,” Kagwe said during the daily COVID-19 briefing from Nyandarua on Monday.
Kenya has recorded 3,727 cases of COVID-19, with 133 new cases reported in the past day. Fatalities have also risen to 104, with one more patient succumbing to the virus. The government has implemented a night curfew, starting from 9pm to 4am, and has closed bars, while allowing restaurants to operate between 4 am and 5pm.
“The virus does not move on its own, it is moved by people. If you see any stranger in your locality report them so that the spread of the virus is suppressed,” Kagwe said.
