On June 15, 2020, a Kakamega businessman, Bernard Bokanda, embarked on a mission to support students from low-income families by distributing revision papers and learning materials.
According to Bokanda, the initiative targets secondary school students, particularly those preparing for the KCSE exams, with a focus on form one to form four students.
Speaking on the importance of community intervention, Bokanda said, "When the government announced that the earliest our children can get back to school is September, I decided that it's now upon parents and leaders in the community to find ways of helping them. This distribution of revision papers targets form one to form four students."
The distribution exercise, which kicked off in Lumakanda ward, aimed to provide at least 750 students with revision papers and hardcopies of excerpts capturing specific topics recommended by the Ministry of Education.
Bokanda expressed concern over the rising cases of teen pregnancies in the county, citing a recent incident involving a class six pupil who impregnated a class four pupil.
He emphasized the need to protect vulnerable students from sex predators, stating, "We have to find a way of keeping them at home by providing them with what they want because they are now in danger."
