On June 13, 2020, the body of Samuel Kinyua Wangware, a 35-year-old Kenyan truck driver from Mathira in Nyeri, Kenya, was found dead inside his truck at the Busitema revenue checkpoint in Uganda's Busia District.
According to eyewitnesses, Wangware had parked his truck, registration number KAT 578T, at the checkpoint while heading to Nairobi from Kampala and was complaining that he was feeling unwell. He was reportedly seen replacing a faulty tyre before entering the cabin as darkness approached.
Busia District Police Commander Eriya Elepot said preliminary investigations into the death pointed to natural causes, but the police are working with medical teams to establish the cause of death.
Wangware's body was taken to Busia Health Centre IV's mortuary for postmortem, and a team from the Busia District Covid-19 taskforce led by Dr Yusuf Lule arrived at the scene to investigate the cause of death.
Dr Lule said the cause of death was still unknown but medical teams and police were working together to establish it. No coronavirus certificate was found in the truck, but the team is going to get in touch with Malaba Port health officials to establish Wangware's Covid-19 status.
