On June 15, 2020, Xu Bin, director of Shanghai's sports bureau, revealed that Formula One chiefs are eager to stage two races in Shanghai this season, despite the Chinese Grand Prix being postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The postponement of the Chinese Grand Prix, originally scheduled for April 19, has not deterred Formula One from pursuing a dual Shanghai Grand Prix. In fact, the sport's management company has proposed hosting two races in the city, one of its key markets.

According to Xu Bin, the city's sports boss, there is no final decision yet on hosting two grand prix in Shanghai. However, he acknowledged that the F1 management company has proposed the idea, citing the need to resume racing in Asia.

China, where the coronavirus emerged late last year, has seen a significant drop in the number of infections and deaths. However, the country is now racing to control a fresh outbreak in the capital Beijing.

Formula One was thrown into chaos in March when the curtain-raising Australian race was cancelled hours before the opening practice session, as the virus spread around the world.
