Kenya Airways is cautiously optimistic about the resumption of passenger flights, with a possible restart in September at a low capacity.
The airline has been grounded since March 22, when the government ordered the suspension of international flights, effectively cutting off its revenue stream.
"There is reasonable expectation that the flights could resume in the third quarter of the year with business expected to have started at very low capacity and a gradual ramp-up, influenced by gradual lifting of travel bans, uncertain passenger confidence and health safety measures," the airline stated in its latest annual report, published on June 15, 2020.
Discussions with key industry stakeholders are underway to ensure a safe return to passenger routes, and the airline expects to cover its variable costs upon resumption.
Kenya Airways has been operating only cargo flights for essential items, but this has not been enough to sustain business, given its pre-coronavirus loss-making status.
Chief Executive Officer Allan Kilavuka had previously sought a bailout from the National Treasury to meet maintenance costs, pay salaries, and settle utility bills.
