Published on June 15, 2020, the Mombasa Tea Auction held on June 8-9, 2020, offered a substantial 12.5 million kilograms of tea for sale, a significant increase from the 8.7 million kilograms offered during the same period in 2019.
Despite the increase in sales volume, the auction witnessed a decline in prices, with a kilogram selling at an average price of $1.77, compared to $2.04 for the same period last year and $1.81 during the previous auction held on June 2-3, 2020.
Tea auction prices have been a subject of interest, with brokers retaining KSh1.4 billion fixing fees, as reported by Kenyan Wall Street. Additionally, Kericho County plans to set up a KSh150 million tea factory and a tea auction, as announced by Kenyan Wall Street.
