On the eve of its official launch, a KSh 1.5 million pit latrine in Nakuru County's Kabatini Ward Administration offices came crashing down, leaving officials reeling in shame.
The four-door latrine, constructed by Carofa Enterprises, was supposed to be officially opened on Friday, but its collapse on Thursday morning has raised eyebrows over the county government's tender process.
According to sources, workers were about to report to the site when the 30-feet lavatory suddenly gave way, narrowly avoiding a potential tragedy.
Kabatini Ward MCA Peter Macharia has blamed cartels within the county government for colluding with rogue contractors to steal taxpayers' money through poor quality building materials and workmanship.
"We thank God the latrine hadn't been launched for use, otherwise we'd be talking of a tragedy now," Macharia lamented.
