The Likoni floating footbridge, a Sh.1.7 billion project, aims to reduce the pressure on overcrowded Likoni ferries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Elungata, the bridge will help alleviate the perennial congestion at the crossing channel, allowing residents to access Mombasa Island and the mainland south with ease.

The project will be undertaken by the State Department of Infrastructure through its implementing agency, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), with the contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), already on site at the Liwatoni area of Mombasa.

"Actually, construction work has started this week and is expected to be complete by November this year," Elungata said.

The new floating bridge will be for the exclusive use of pedestrians, providing an alternative to the ferries and enhancing trade and integration between the residents of the island and mainland south.

Elungata emphasized the importance of adhering to public health regulations to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus, urging residents to continue supporting the government's efforts in curbing the disease.
