As of June 15, 2020, Kenyans will pay KSh 5.77 more for a litre of petrol, which will retail at KSh 89.10 in Nairobi. This increase is a result of a 31.54% rise in the cost of importing Super Petrol, from $188.70 per cubic meter in April to $248.21 in May.

However, customers will pay less for diesel and kerosene after the prices fell by KSh 3.80 and KSh 17.31 respectively. Diesel will now sell at KSh 74.57, while Kerosene will retail at KSh 62.46 in Nairobi.

The changes are attributed to a change in the price of imported fuel, as well as a looming 14% VAT in the Finance Bill 2020 expected to pass into law on July 1. The rising crude oil prices are also likely to reflect on the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas throughout the country.

EPRA has warned oil marketers against hoarding of petroleum products, following reports of hoarding in the Western region, which resulted in an artificial shortage of the commodity.

According to Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act 2019, Legal Notice No. 196 of 2010 and Legal Notice No. 26 of 2012, EPRA has calculated the maximum wholesale and retail prices of petroleum products which will be in force from 15th June 2020 to 14th July 2020.
