Buhari 'Safe' After Incident Involving Guards at Abuja Residence

On June 12, 2020, an incident occurred at the presidential villa in Abuja, Nigeria, involving the security detail of President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, the president was not in any danger during the incident, which is currently under investigation.

Mr. Shehu stated on Twitter, 'This is to assure everyone that the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces is not, and was not at anytime in any form of danger arising, either from deadly infections or the reported incident by security personnel which is currently under investigation.'

He added that some staff members had been arrested by the police and that security officers assigned to the president's residence would also be investigated for their handling of weapons during the incident.

Local media reported that the incident occurred on Friday and involved aides of First Lady Aisha Buhari and guards at the presidential villa.

First Lady Aisha Buhari has since tweeted, calling for the release of her aides.
