Published on June 15, 2020, South Africa's Energy ministry has proposed a 2,500 megawatt nuclear power plant building programme to supplement the country's power capacity.

The programme aims to address problems at state utility Eskom's fleet of coal-fired power plants, some of which will be decommissioned over the next two decades.

However, the proposal has faced opposition from environmental campaigners, who are concerned about the cost, possible ownership structures, and sustainability of the nuclear programme.
