On Sunday afternoon, Nakuru experienced heavy rains that led to flash floods on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
A section of the highway under the railway underpass was flooded, leaving at least one vehicle submerged.
Motorists using the route were stranded after the railway underpass sections became impassable.
The railway underpass has a history of flooding, with the county government struggling to maintain the drainage system that collects water from Menengai Crater in the north to Lake Nakuru.
As recently as 2018, a Matatu loaded with passengers was submerged at the railway underpass, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old girl who was taken to Nakuru Nursing Home hospital.
At the time, Governor Lee Kinyanjui promised to implement an elaborate sewer management and drainage plan to end the perennial flooding not only at the bridge but the town in general.
However, Nakuru town's dilapidated system remains unable to handle the pressure, leaving residents and commuters vulnerable to such incidents.
