Published on June 14, 2020, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been weighing the future of Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez, who has been a major disappointment since joining the club in January 2018.
Sanchez's swap deal from Arsenal has been a costly mistake, with the 31-year-old scoring just three goals in 32 League games for United. His season-long loan move to Inter Milan has also been a failure, with Sanchez scoring only one goal in his first four games before a dislocated ankle ruled him out for over three months.
Since his return to fitness in January, Sanchez has played in 11 games under Inter boss Antonio Conte, but has failed to score in any of those matches. With United facing financial difficulties due to the coronavirus pandemic, the club's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is less keen on paying off the remaining two years of Sanchez's deal.
However, Solskjaer has hinted that Sanchez could still have a role to play at the club, but only if he is willing to accept a squad role rather than a first-choice guarantee. Solskjaer said, 'Of course, there's a place for good players and good people in this environment. Let's see where we get to after the season, because we do feel this squad is exciting.'
Sanchez's future at Manchester United remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the club needs to make a decision about his role in the team.
