On June 13, 2020, a tragic incident unfolded in Kyamavui village, Mithumo sub-location, Mbooni East, Makueni County, where a 30-year-old man, Boniface Kivuku Mutua, brutally assaulted his estranged wife, Purity Muthoki Makau, 24.

The couple had been married for three years but their union had hit the rocks, with the woman returning to her parent's home. The estranged husband, however, decided to pay an impromptu visit to his in-laws, arriving at their home at around 8 pm.

After dinner, the father-in-law, Nicolas Makau Munywoki, left the couple and went to a neighbor's house, only to hear cries for help from his daughter. Upon returning to his home, he found that the door had been locked from the inside by the estranged husband.

But the man opened the door when the villagers trooped to the home and tried to flee. The angry locals caught up with him and stoned him to death, as confirmed by Makueni County Police Commander Joseph Ole Naipeyan.

The woman, who is fighting for her life at the Makueni Referral Hospital, was taken to theatre and had her two hands amputated due to the deep cuts inflicted by her estranged husband. Dr. Athman Lugogo, a medical officer at the hospital, stated that the patient will undergo counseling due to the trauma she has experienced.
