On June 14, 2020, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe issued a stern warning to leaders who continued to disregard COVID-19 regulations.

Speaking during a tour of Nyeri County, Kagwe emphasized that the government would not tolerate any form of laxity or impunity in the fight against the pandemic.

Since the first case was reported in March, the government had implemented various preventive measures, including a ban on public gatherings.

However, some leaders had been hosting social gatherings, including political meetings, funerals, and weddings, despite the ban.

‘This is wrong. People are beginning to feel like we are living post-COVID-19, it is wrong and that is breaking the law,’ Kagwe said.

He urged enforcement agencies, particularly chiefs and sub-chiefs, to ensure that the rules were followed strictly to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

As of June 14, 2020, the virus had infected 3,594 people and killed 100 in Kenya.

Kagwe also asked leaders to set an example by observing the guidelines issued by the government.

His warning came after several leaders, including COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli and Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa, were accused of hosting gatherings while flouting the virus regulations.
