On June 14, 2020, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) implemented new fuel prices in Kenya, affecting motorists across the country.

Starting from mid-night, the price of super petrol increased by Sh5.77 per litre, making it retail at Sh89.10 per litre. This change is attributed to a 31.54 percent increase in the average landed cost of imported super petrol from US$188.70 per cubic metre in April to US$248.21 per cubic metre in May.

However, EPRA spared diesel and kerosene users, lowering the prices of the commodities by Sh3.80 and Sh17.31 per litre, respectively. Diesel will now retail at Sh74.57 per litre, while kerosene will retail at Sh62.46 per litre.

The new prices have considered the changes effected by the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act of 2020, which made taxes and duties part of the vatable amount in the calculation of VAT for petroleum fuels.

According to EPRA Director General Pavel Oimeke, the fuel pricing regulations aim to cap the wholesale and retail prices of petroleum products, allowing for the recovery of importation and other prudently incurred costs while ensuring reasonable prices to consumers.

Here are the new pump prices per city:

  • Mombasa: Super petrol at Sh86.62, diesel at Sh72.09, and kerosene at Sh59.99 per litre.
  • Nakuru: Super petrol at Sh88.96, diesel at Sh74.62, and kerosene at Sh62.54 per litre.
  • Eldoret: Super petrol at Sh89.94, diesel at Sh75.59, and kerosene at Sh63.51 per litre.
  • Kisumu: Super petrol at Sh89.94, diesel at Sh75.58, and kerosene at Sh63.51 per litre.
