On June 14, 2020, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) released new fuel prices for Kenya, which will be in effect until mid-July.

The new prices reflect a Sh5.77 per liter increase in Super Petrol, while Diesel and Kerosene prices have decreased by Sh3.80 and Sh17.31 per liter, respectively.

According to EPRA, the change in Super Petrol prices is due to a 31.54 percent increase in the average landed cost of imported super petrol from US$188.70 per cubic meter in April to US$248.21 per cubic meter in May.

Meanwhile, the average landed cost of imported diesel and kerosene dropped by 5.58 percent and 51.84 percent, leading to a decrease in the prices of these commodities.

Here are the new prices per city:

  • Mombasa: Super Petrol - Sh86.62, Diesel - Sh72.09, Kerosene - Sh59.99 per liter
  • Nakuru: Super Petrol - Sh88.96, Diesel - Sh74.62, Kerosene - Sh62.54 per liter
  • Eldoret: Super Petrol - Sh89.94, Diesel - Sh75.59, Kerosene - Sh63.51 per liter
  • Kisumu: Super Petrol - Sh89.94, Diesel - Sh75.58, Kerosene - Sh63.51 per liter

EPRA Director General Pavel Oimeke stated that the new prices take into account the changes made by the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act of 2020, which made taxes and duties part of the vatable amount in the calculation of VAT for petroleum fuels.

"The objective of the fuel pricing regulations is to cap the wholesale and retail prices of petroleum products, which are already in the country, so that the importation and other prudently incurred costs are recovered, while ensuring reasonable prices to consumers," Oimeke said.
