June 14, 2020 - Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has announced that the government is considering alternative approaches to resolve the long-standing conflict between Marsabit and Wajir counties.
Speaking after receiving six security officers who were injured in a police helicopter crash in Meru, CS Matiang'i expressed regret over the failure of mediation in resolving the conflict, citing the loss of several public officials.
He noted that the Ministry of Interior has suffered greatly in the process, with several officials losing their lives in the pursuit of peace in the region.
CS Matiang'i warned that the government will no longer be lenient to leaders who fuel the conflict, stating that stringent actions will be taken against them.
He cited the example of the Nakuru-Narok border and the West Pokot-Elgeyo-Marakwet border, where local leaders and residents were able to resolve conflicts using local systems of government.
CS Matiang'i made the remarks while receiving the injured security officers at the Wilson Airport, who were part of the Eastern Regional Security team led by Commissioner Isaiah Nakoru.
