On June 13, 2020, a Covid-19 outbreak was reported at Manyani Maximum Security Prison in Voi, Taita Taveta County, after an inmate tested positive for the virus.
The convict was recently transferred from Shimo La Tewa Maximum Prison and was isolated at Rekeke Health Centre after being evacuated from the prison on Saturday night.
According to sources, one of his colleagues who had come into close contact with him was quarantined at the correctional facility.
County Health Executive John Mwakima confirmed that the county's rapid response team had commenced contact tracing to identify all those who had interacted with the patient in the recent past.
"They were only two in their cubicle. The other inmate has been quarantined within the facility. We will get a full report tomorrow," Mwakima said.
Meanwhile, the county health department has also begun mass testing of traders along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, targeting those who often interact with truck drivers who ply the highway.
