On June 14, 2020, a significant development in Kenya's 2022 presidential election landscape emerged, with Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi at the center.
According to a statement by ANC Secretary General Barack Muluka, Deputy President William Ruto has agreed to drop his 2022 presidential bid in favor of supporting Mudavadi.
As reported by Kenyan Report on June 14, 2020, Muluka stated that Ruto has indicated his willingness to support Mudavadi both with his personal vote and by helping him secure more votes.
However, this development comes as a surprise, given that Mudavadi had previously refuted assertions that he would be Ruto's running mate in the 2022 election.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with Milele FM last week, Mudavadi stated that he would not step down to become Ruto's running mate, adding that he would be Ruto's opponent as he would also be running for the country's top seat.
It remains to be seen how this sudden shift in Ruto's stance will impact the 2022 presidential election, with many still questioning Mudavadi's intentions and whether he is truly a unifying factor in Western Kenya.
