June 14, 2020 - The African continent is grappling with a severe Covid-19 outbreak, with cases surpassing 225,000 and 43 countries under full border closure.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) reported that the northern African region is the most affected area, with South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Djibouti, Nigeria, and Algeria being the highly affected countries.
Some countries have reported new records for daily increases in Covid-19 infections, with Egypt registering 1,677 new cases and Ethiopia reporting 268 new cases.
South Africa, the worst-hit country, has registered a total of 65,736 cases and 1,423 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University's latest tally.
As part of efforts to contain the spread of the virus, night-time curfews have been activated across 35 countries, and some seven countries have imposed international air traffic closures.
Additionally, 54 African countries are practicing limited public gatherings, 38 countries have closed educational institutions, and 20 countries have limited prison and hospital visits.
