On June 13, 2020, a police helicopter crashed in a farm in Ciomburu, Imenti North, Meru County, injuring six officers.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i received the injured officers at the Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

The helicopter, an Agusta Westland AW119, was headed to Sololo, Marsabit County, for a security meeting when it came down in misty weather.

According to Meru County Police Commander Patrick Lumumba, the chopper crashed due to bad weather at 8am in Kaithe village on the outskirts of Meru town.

The injured officers were first taken to Meru Level Five Hospital and later transferred to Nairobi, where they were airlifted to a city hospital.

Airwing Commandant Col (Rtd) Rodgers Mbithi, who was flying to Garissa and Wajir to pick his team, said the pilot and the others on board were 'ok. Stable.'

While receiving the officers at the airport, Matiang'i warned that the Government would arrest politicians accused of fanning ethnic clashes in the region.

‘We are not going to be merciful. It is time we changed our approach to the security matters in this region,’ Matiang'i said.
