On Saturday morning, a police chopper carrying the Eastern Regional Security team crash-landed at Kaithe in Meru, injuring six officers, including the team's leader, Eastern Regional Commissioner Isaiah Nakoru.

Nakoru, who was critically injured, is now stabilizing, while the other four officers are in stable condition with minor injuries.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i received the injured officers at the Wilson Airport and expressed concern over the repeated injuries and losses of security officers in Northern Kenya.

"It is concerning to see our security officers repeatedly getting injured, and at times paying the ultimate price while trying to resolve conflict in Northern Kenya. We are going to change our security approach, and enforce stiffer measures to bring sanity, in the area," Matiang'i said.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, which occurred on June 13, 2020.

The chopper, an Agusta Westland AW119, was among the new fleet acquired by the police.
