On Saturday, a chaotic scene unfolded in Kisumu county as locals attempted to exhume the body of Ohangla star Abenny Jachiga, who was buried at 2:30 am under tight security with only his brother as the witness.
Monica Auma, Jachiga's mother, and his widow Belinda Aluoch, were forced to lie on his grave to plead with the angry mourners not to remove his body, singing a dirge as they wailed.
The mourners had vowed to exhume and return the body to a morgue for a decent burial, citing the secretive and hurried burial conducted by armed police as a reason for their anger.
Locals have criticized the burial, blaming Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyongo and the police for colluding to inter their hero against his family and followers' wishes.
According to Luo tradition, it is an abomination to bury someone at night like a stranger or suicide victim, and exhuming a body from the grave is also forbidden.
