Published on June 13, 2020, a letter from Roberto Simone, the Managing Director of Kempinski Kenya, revealed that the hotel would be sending home an undisclosed number of workers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The decision, which affects multiple departments and cadres of employees, is a result of the rising cases of coronavirus, which have significantly reduced the number of guests at the hotel, impacting its operations.
According to Simone, the hotel will pay redundancy dues in accordance with the Employment Act, 2007, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement in place between the two parties.
Workers affected by the retrenchment decision have been advised to contact the human resource department for further clarification.
The dismissals are the latest in a series of job losses that have hit corporate Kenya, adding to the pain of affected households as breadwinners lose their income at a time of rising costs of living.
The hospitality sector has been one of the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, with a drop in guests resulting in a fall in revenue.
