Published on June 13, 2020, a humanitarian crisis in the Tana Delta region of Lamu and Tana River continues to worsen due to ongoing floods.
Heavy rains have caused River Tana to burst its banks, flooding several areas of Tana River County, including the Tana Delta sub-county, which is among the worst affected.
According to Bonaya Abadima Chalaluma, a 60-year-old village headman, the delta has become unbearable, with residents losing everything, including houses constructed by the Kenya Red Cross during a reconstruction program in 2018.
Lamu County Woman Representative Ruweida Mohamed has decried the marginalization of the county, stating that 6,000 people remain displaced in Lamu County.
Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has announced that the government has set aside 3.5 billion shillings for the reconstruction of affected villages and provision of relief to affected persons.
Tana River Governor Hussein Dhado has cautioned residents to move to raised grounds, warning that people have moved close to the river and flooding will continue if they do not settle away from the delta.
Meanwhile, over 1,000 households affected by floods in Tana River, Lamu, Isiolo, and Baringo counties are set to benefit from a donation of non-food items by Safaricom Foundation, in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross.
