On June 13, 2020, Kirinyaga County residents staged a protest against an anticipated plan to save Governor Anne Waiguru, who was unanimously impeached by the County Assembly Members.

The residents warned President Uhuru Kenyatta against interfering with the Senate's decision on Waiguru's impeachment, which is expected to be finalized next week.

According to the residents, President Kenyatta has been vocal about condemning graft, and they expect him to uphold this stance by denying Waiguru's reinstatement.

“To you President Kenyatta, remember you have been condemning graft and this is your time to deny the governor,” one resident in Kutus stated.

The residents also pleaded with the Executive not to manipulate the senators, as it has happened in similar cases.

County leaders, including Kirinyaga Senator Charles Kibiru, Gichugu MP Robert Gichimu, Mwea MP Kabinga Wathayu, and Kirinyaga Central MP John Wambugu, have also urged the President to give the Senate humble time to do their work on Waiguru's accusations without interference.

They issued a joint statement, citing that the MCAs had reasonable grounds for the governor's ouster and requesting the Senate Speaker and the Business Committee to settle for the most democratic method of adjudicating the proposed amendment.
