Are Painful Periods Normal? ¶
For many women, painful periods are a normal part of menstruation. However, severe cramps can be a sign of an underlying condition that needs medical attention.
According to medical experts, hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle can trigger muscle contractions, leading to cramps. While some women may experience mild pain, others may experience excruciating pain that interferes with daily life.
So, when should you see a doctor? If you experience any of the following symptoms, it's time to consult a medical professional:
- Severe cramps that interfere with daily life
- Heavy bleeding during your period
- Bleeding between periods
- Persistent pain that lasts for more than a few days
- Pelvic pain
- Presence of blood clots
- Pain during sex
These symptoms could be a sign of an underlying condition, such as endometriosis, fibroids, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ovarian cysts, or cervical stenosis.
Don't ignore these symptoms. Consult a doctor to determine the cause and receive proper treatment. In the meantime, you can try managing stress and exercising regularly to reduce painful cramps during your period.
