On June 13, 2020, Standard Chartered Bank Kenya marked a significant milestone in its Women in Tech programme by awarding Sh1 million in seed funding to five women-led tech businesses.
The programme, launched in partnership with iLab Africa - a division of Strathmore University in 2017, aims to support and nurture entrepreneurship, technology, and business growth for women.
The five winners, selected from a pool of 180 companies, are Bena Care, Arbres Biotech, Nature's Touch, Soul Food Enterprises, and Taste Afrique.
According to Kariuki Ngari, the Standard Chartered Bank Kenya chief executive, the programme aspires to drive economic growth by empowering women-led businesses.
Dr Joseph Sevilla, the director of @iBizAfrica Centre at Strathmore University, noted that the programme has shown an increase in women-led businesses with potential to drive the economy.
