Published on June 12, 2020, a controversy has erupted within the Talai community over the coronation of Deputy President William Ruto as their leader.

A faction of the Talai Council of Elders, led by Stephen Sugut, has distanced itself from the ceremony, claiming it was conducted by young men who did not follow the traditional customs.

The group pointed out several anomalies, including the use of honey during the ceremony, which is contrary to their traditions.

"We are not against the coronation, but we are against the way it was executed," Sugut said. "For instance, there should be no use of honey when the leader is dressed with the Sambut."

The Talai Council of Elders had earlier refuted reports that Deputy President Ruto visited them for a traditional cleansing and to seek special powers to stop the ongoing leadership crisis in the Jubilee Party.

Now, the genuine Talai elders are threatening to curse the fake elders who coronated the Deputy President as their leader.
