On June 12, 2020, the streets of Nairobi witnessed a disturbing display of banners defaming Chief Justice David Maraga. The Judiciary has since urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to institute a probe into the matter.

The banners, which were displayed on footbridges in most parts of the city, threatened to expose purported underhand dealings by the Chief Justice. The messages bore images of Maraga and other superior court judges, sparking concerns about the escalating public spat between the Chief Justice and Attorney General Kihara Kariuki.

The Judiciary views the attacks as part of an elaborate scheme meant to threaten and intimidate the institution. In a statement, the Judiciary warned that these attacks would not deter them from discharging their core mandate of dispensing justice in a fair, just, and independent manner.

The Judiciary has also called upon the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to ensure that public spaces are not used to perpetuate criminal attacks against the Judiciary and judicial officers.
