Published on June 12, 2020, a tense standoff unfolded in Mackinnon Road Town as leaders from Makueni and Kwale resisted attempts by Taita-Taveta Governor Granton Samboja to annex their territory.

Three revenue officers from Taita-Taveta, including Director for Revenue Simon Irina, were arrested and detained at Taru Police Station for alleged trespass.

Their counterparts from Kwale had suspended revenue collection in the town two months prior to cushion residents against Covid-19, only to return after learning of Samboja's plans to take over the town.

Taita-Taveta CEC for Finance Andrew Kubo accused the police of orchestrating the arrests to frustrate Taita-Taveta's claim on the town.

"Our officials were arrested for alleged trespass for collecting revenue in Mackinnon Road which is Taita-Taveta. They are now held at Taru police station and we are trying to have them released," Kubo said.
