On June 11, 2020, Nakuru County Commissioners Erastus Mbui, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya, and Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Marcus Ocholla visited Mercy Cherono at Nakuru Provincial General Hospital, where she was being treated for injuries sustained during the incident.
According to Rift Valley Police Commandant Marcus Ocholla, three police officers have been arrested in connection with the incident, which sparked widespread anger among Kenyans after a dehumanizing clip emerged on social media.
Local police boss Henry Nyaranga denied claims that one of his officers was involved in the incident, stating that his officers rescued Cherono from irate members of the public who had descended on her after allegedly being caught stealing household items.
Cherono initially claimed that she was beaten up by a police officer, but later retracted her statement, indicating that she was roughed up by members of the public before being rescued by police officers.
Interior CS Fred Matiang'i confirmed the arrest of the three police officers, stating that the government would not hesitate to punish rogue police officers.
"Three police officers have been apprehended in connection with the Kuresoi incident where a woman was mishandled," Matiang'i said on Thursday.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for action to be taken against the perpetrators.
