Published on June 12, 2020, Eliud Kipchoge, the marathon world record holder, shared his insights on discipline in sports during a webinar organized by the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK).
According to Kipchoge, self-discipline is what drives him, and it takes a lot of discipline to set priorities right and stay focused. He noted that without discipline, success is nothing, and it's what guides athletes back to the course when they're outside.
Janet Wanja, a veteran Malkia Strikers setter, also participated in the webinar, moderated by BBC Sport Africa's Lynne Wachira. Wanja emphasized the importance of staying grounded and surrounding oneself with people who provide the right advice.
Kipchoge also highlighted the need to be humble in victory and not over-celebrate. He criticized athletes who indulge in excessive celebrations, saying it's the end of them as human beings. Instead, he advised athletes to remain focused and motivated to do better.
Wanja shared a similar perspective, stating that everyone has a bad day in office, but it's how one picks themselves up from failure that matters. She emphasized the importance of self-motivation and analyzing one's mistakes to do better.
Kipchoge also reflected on his own experiences, including missing out on an Olympic spot in 2012, which he described as one of the lowest moments in his career. However, he chose to treat it as a challenge and moved forward, learning from his mistakes.
