Published on June 12, 2020, Garissa County is set to benefit from a grant worth over Ksh 6 million annually to support irrigation farm groups.
According to Garissa county ASDSP coordinator Dr. Ahmed Hasan, each group will receive between Ksh 200,000 and Ksh 250,000 annually until the end of the programme in 2022.
The funding program, which was officially opened by Agriculture and Livestock CEC Mohamed Shale, aims to alleviate the sufferings of farmers who have been adversely affected by recent floods, locust invasion, and the Covid-19 pandemic.
‘This support has come at a time when our farmers are faced with a triple tragedy. In December last they lost their crops to the floods. In early January we had the locust invasion and now the Covid-19,’ Shale said.
The CEC noted that the funding will go a long way in helping farmers recover from the huge losses they have incurred.
He also urged the value chain actors producing tomato, beef, and camel milk to come up with valid proposals before August for approval.
