West Asembo Member of County Assembly (MCA) Ambrose Akuno has called on the Luo community to reassess their land use practices, warning that subdividing land for individual homesteads is condemning them to poverty.
Akuno argues that the cultural practice of constructing separate homesteads for each family member has led to landlessness and forced many families to use their limited resources to purchase land elsewhere.
He suggests that the community should instead consolidate land for large-scale agricultural production, which he believes would be more beneficial for their well-being.
According to Akuno, the increasing population and diminishing land resources make it impractical for the Luo community to prioritize homestead construction over agricultural production.
He has also asked the County Government to allocate funds to support vulnerable families, citing the need for assistance in addressing the issue.
Notably, Rarieda area MP Dr. Otiende Amolo is already running an initiative called 'Ondoa Nyasi' to construct houses for widows and destitute families.
