Raila's Family Firm Wins Lucrative Water Tender in Kisumu County ¶
Published on June 12, 2020, a deal to award a lucrative water tender to Spectre International Limited, a company owned by the family of opposition leader Raila Odinga, has raised eyebrows.
The Kisumu-based company bagged the tender to supply water to parts of Kisumu County, following a report that a firm associated with the Kenyatta Family had won a tender to supply wooden poles to Kenya Power at a cost of Sh 111 million.
A letter from Kisumu County approving the deal cited a water deficit in Kisumu West, stating that the proposal for bulk water supply by Spectre International Limited would help augment the same.
However, the growing trend of prominent families in Kenya winning lucrative tenders has ignited public concerns over whether due process is being followed or whether the tenders were offered in return for political loyalty.
According to a statement by Raila Odinga, he pegs his net worth at about Sh 2 billion and does not consider himself rich.
‘They are saying Raila Odinga is so rich…so very rich…which is not true. I am worth about two billion shillings,’’ Raila told a local TV station (NTV).
