On June 12, 2020, Treasury allocated Sh11.8 billion to the Konza Technopolis project, including Sh5 billion for the Konza Data Centre and Smart City.

Despite the allocation, the ICT sector received a total of Sh19.5 billion in the 2020/21 financial year, down from Sh20.5 billion allocated earlier due to rationalisation by Treasury in response to the harsh economic environment caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Out of the budget, Sh10 billion has been allocated for ICT infrastructure development, Sh2.3 billion for e-government services, and Sh5.2 billion to the State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunication.

Meanwhile, parliament last week queried the ICT Ministry and Treasury over the failure to centralise procurement and purchasing of ICT equipment, leading to duplication and waste of resources.
