On June 12, 2020, the East African Community (EAC) member states made a crucial decision to combat the spread of COVID-19 among truck drivers.

Truck drivers have been a significant concern in the fight against the spread of the virus, with allegations of using fake certificates to cross borders.

Each EAC member state had been addressing the issue independently, but the results were disappointing.

However, the recent agreement to roll out digital COVID-19-free certificates for truck drivers is a welcome move.

The digital certificates will be linked to all laboratories, ensuring a seamless and coordinated operation.

Truck drivers will be required to take COVID-19 tests at the point of departure at least 48 hours before commencing their journeys.

This move aims to curb the use of fake documents and ensure adherence to COVID-19 protocols, easing traffic snarl-ups at border points and facilitating the flow of goods across borders.
