Elgeyo-Marakwet County's upcoming athletes are skeptical about the government's promise to complete the Kamariny Stadium within the next four months.
The athletes, mainly long-distance runners, have been waiting for a perfect stadium to accommodate their training, but the wait continues.
Speaking to Nation Sport, the athletes expressed their concerns, citing the repeated delays in the construction process over the past three years.
Meshack Kipruto, an upcoming marathoner, said, 'What we saw last week is no different from what has been happening over the years. The stadium, which ironically sits at the 'County of champions' has been reduced to stones and unfinished structures. We have only been using half of it.'
According to Kipruto, the county and national government need to work on a long-lasting mechanism to ensure the stadium's construction is carried out successfully.
Other athletes, like Boniface Kimutai, a half-marathon racer, face financial constraints and lack of training resources, making it difficult for them to access alternative training grounds in neighboring counties.
The Kamariny Stadium's construction was halted in 2017 due to lack of funds, and although it briefly resumed in 2019, it stopped again after the contractor left the site.
