On June 11, 2020, the Ministry of Sports in Kenya flagged several lists submitted by sports federations, including the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF), after it was discovered that most of the names included were not vulnerable.
Kenya Basketball Federation's treasurer, Peter Orero, initially defended the federation's list, stating that they had included foreign-based players who were suffering due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the suspension of sports activities.
However, in response to the outcry from basketball stakeholders, the KBF has announced that it will review its original list and ensure that only players who do not have any source of income are captured.
The Ministry of Sports had demanded that all lists be reviewed and only vulnerable sportspersons included.
According to Orero, the KBF is working on a new list, which will be presented to the Ministry by Tuesday, ahead of the second disbursement of funds.
Only players and officials who are not engaged will be considered for the revised list.
