Kenya's 2020/2021 Budget: A Breakdown ¶
On June 11, 2020, Treasury CS Ukur Yatani unveiled an ambitious Ksh 2.79 trillion budget for the 2020/2021 financial year.
The education sector was the biggest beneficiary, receiving Ksh 497.7 billion, accounting for 26.7 percent of the budget. This allocation includes Ksh 59.4 billion for free day secondary education and Ksh 12.4 billion for free primary education.
A further Ksh 2.0 billion has been set aside for the recruitment of 5,000 teachers across the country.
CS Yatani stated that the budget responds to the current challenges facing Kenyans, businesses, and the economy in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It is in this context that we have chosen the theme for this budget as stimulating the Economy to Safeguard Livelihoods, Jobs, Businesses and Industrial Recovery," he said.
County Governments have been allocated Ksh 369.9 billion, comprising Ksh 316.5 billion in equitable share.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Services has been allocated Ksh 26.4 billion to facilitate the performance of transferred functions from Nairobi County.
Other key allocations include Ksh 128.3 billion for the "Big Four" Agenda drivers and enablers, Ksh 111.7 billion for the health sector, and Ksh 172.4 billion for infrastructure development.
CS Yatani also proposed an allocation of Ksh 167.9 billion to support security operations in the country.
Other notable allocations include Ksh 52.8 billion for Food and Nutrition Security, Ksh 63.3 billion for energy generation, and Ksh 82.7 billion for environment and water conservation.
