On April 7, High Court Justice Weldon Korir issued a temporary order halting the debate on Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru's impeachment until July 2, citing the challenges of holding a fair hearing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, despite this order, the Kirinyaga County Assembly proceeded with the impeachment motion, which was later handed over to Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka for deliberation.
Waiguru, through her lawyer Waweru Gatonye, had sought to have her impeachment declared null and void pending the determination of the case, arguing that the MCAs had acted in contempt of court orders.
Justice Korir ruled on Thursday that the MCAs did not violate court orders when they moved forward with the motion, effectively rejecting Waiguru's bid to nullify her impeachment.
Waiguru was impeached on Tuesday over claims of abuse of office and violating the Constitution, with 23 out of 33 MCAs voting in favor of her removal.
