On June 11, 2020, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani presented the 2020/21 budget to Parliament, allocating Sh37.3 billion to aid in its oversight and legislative role.
According to Yatani, his ministry faced tough decisions in allocating monies in different sectors, prioritizing the country's progress amid the COVID-19 pandemic, locust invasions, and floods.
The Judiciary's funding was set at Sh18.1 billion, while the Auditor General's office secured Sh5.2 billion to support oversight on the expenditure of financial resources.
Yatani attributed the tight budget projections to the COVID-19 pandemic, locust invasions, and floods, which are expected to result in a Sh172 billion loss for the government.
However, he expressed confidence that the country's debt level is sustainable and that the government is shifting towards concessional borrowing to ease the debt burden.
