South Sudan has lost two of its prominent officials in the span of a week. Ambassador Jwokgwen Severio Yukwan, who served as the country's envoy to Belgium, has died at the age of 64.
According to Information Minister Michael Makuei, Ambassador Yukwan passed away in Juba on Monday after suffering from malaria and diabetes. The diplomat had a long and illustrious career, having served in various missions since the 1980s, including being appointed as second secretary in the then Sudan.
Before his death, Ambassador Yukwan was preparing to travel to Belgium to resume his duties but had to postpone the trip due to Covid-19 travel restrictions. He is survived by two widows and 11 children.
Meanwhile, South Sudan's Central Bank First Deputy Governor Maror Chier also died this week after a short illness. He was receiving treatment in Kenya's capital Nairobi, Mr Makuei said.
