Clashes between two communities along the Wajir-Marsabit border have left a trail of death and destruction, with at least seven people confirmed dead.

According to Wajir County Deputy Governor Ahmed Muktar, the fighting began a few days ago and has since displaced over 150 households.

On Wednesday, a peace mission led by Deputy Governor Muktar, members of the county security team, and Kenya Red Cross Society officials visited the affected area in Basir, Eldas Sub-County.

During the visit, the team donated food and non-food items to the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the camp.

"We are here to condole with the members of the community following the fighting. We know that seven people have so far been buried and a number of others missing including two others who are yet to be buried," said Deputy Governor Muktar.

Wajir County Commissioner Jacob Narengo also called for peaceful co-existence among the communities, urging them to stay calm and stop the fighting to prevent further loss of lives.

However, an attempt to find a common ground between the two groups was thwarted due to the tension in the area, prompting the peace caravan led by the elders to be postponed to a later date.

Commissioner Narengo said that they would be looking for a neutral ground in the days to come to hold another meeting to reconcile the two communities.
