On June 11, 2020, the High Court in Nairobi delivered a significant blow to embattled Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru by dismissing a petition challenging her ouster.
Justice Weldon Korir ruled that the Kirinyaga County Assembly Members (MCAs) did not violate any laws when they impeached the Governor, and the case was dismissed with cost.
The ruling comes as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) begins probing corruption allegations leveled against Governor Waiguru.
However, some believe the impeachment battle may not be over yet, as the case proceeds to the Senate where Governor Waiguru may be saved.
Women leaders, including Cabinet Secretary Kobia, have strongly defended Governor Waiguru, expressing their disappointment at the county assembly members who championed her ouster.
“It is unfortunate that Waiguru's term is being cut short by an impeachment. This is an indicator that some of us do not value strong women leadership,” CS Kobia said in a statement.
