On June 11, 2020, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani unveiled the 2020/2021 budget, with a focus on economic recovery in Kenya.
Yattani, in his first budget presentation as Treasury CS, highlighted the government's priority to address the country's economic challenges.
He allocated Sh10 billion for unemployed youths in urban areas, to be expended under the Kazi kwa Vijana initiative, which will offer casual jobs to the youths.
The government plans to engage over 200,000 youth in the National Hygiene Programme, to cushion them from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Additionally, Sh5 billion has been allocated for the rehabilitation of damaged access roads and bridges.
Yattani stated that the unemployed youths in major cities and urban settlements, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, and Nakuru, will engage in fumigation and cleaning of markets and other environmental management activities.
The Treasury projects to collect at least Sh1.9 trillion, including Sh1.6 trillion of ordinary revenue, which includes tax collections, investment incomes, and other revenues collected by the Kenya Revenue Authority.
